Nudge, Reminder, or Task? The Words That Get Confused

Why the Words Matter

The assistant category has a vocabulary problem. Nudge, reminder, task, agent: four words, used interchangeably in marketing, describing four genuinely different relationships between you and a piece of software.

The difference is not pedantry. One of these words implies that something will act on your behalf, and the others do not. If a product is vague about which one it is, you will find out later, usually at a permissions screen.

So here is each word, what it actually means, and what it asks of you.

Task

A task is a piece of work to be done. It is a thing you decided, at some point, that you would do.

A task has no time attached by default. That is its weakness and its honesty. A list of tasks with no dates is a description of intentions, not a plan, which is why long task lists tend to sit there feeling heavy without producing much. The problem is not that the tasks are fake. It is that nothing is prompting them.

Reminder

A reminder is something that makes you remember. In practice, it is a task plus a time.

This is the most underrated object in personal software. A task with no date relies on you thinking about it. A task with a date and a notification does not. The date does the remembering, so you do not have to hold it.

This is the entire reason reminders work, and it is why we say a dated todo is a different tool from a list. The full comparison is in AI Secretary vs a To-Do App.

Nudge

A nudge is a gentle push. That is the physical meaning of the word, and the figurative one kept the important property: a nudge moves something slightly, without force, and without authority.

A nudge cannot act. It cannot sign, book, send, or decide. It can only make you more likely to do the thing yourself.

That limit is the point. A nudge is the strongest thing you can do for someone without taking control away from them, which is exactly the right ceiling for software that is not allowed to touch your accounts.

Agent

An agent is one that acts. The word has no gentleness in it. An agent exerts power and produces an effect.

Applied to software, that is a promise to do things on your behalf. Which means it needs reach, and reach means access. There is nothing dishonest about this. It is just a much larger request, and it is often made without saying so, because the permissions screen always arrives eventually. AI Agent vs AI Secretary goes further into why the label sets your expectations before you have read a single feature page.

Putting Them Together

Here is the whole shape, in one pass.

A task is what you intend. A reminder is that intention with a date, so it does not depend on you holding it. A nudge is the reminder arriving as a gentle prompt, with no authority behind it. An agent is a different promise entirely, and it is the one that comes with a permissions screen.

Secy sits in the first three, on purpose. Motions are a collection of todos and reminders that move you forward, and they nudge you at the right moment so nothing important slips. Secy does not act on your behalf, and no part of it needs access to your other apps. The reasoning behind that order is set out in Why Your AI Should Earn the Right to Act.

That means the words we use are not a style choice. “Nudge” is accurate. “Agent” would not be.

A horizontal scale from useful to shouting, with a gold marker resting near the quiet end.

How to Read the Next Product You Look At

When a product describes what it will do, listen for which of these four words it has actually earned.

If it says it will act for you, ask what it needs access to, and ask what happens the first time it is wrong. If it says it will remind you, check that the reminder can actually reach you, because a reminder you have to go looking for is just a task.

And if it says nothing at all about any of this, that silence is information too.

Final Thought

Words are how a product tells you what it expects from you. Task, reminder, nudge, agent: the first three ask for your attention, and the last one asks for your keys.

Know which one you are being sold.
